Frequently Asked Questions
How does this program help me?
- Although this program does a pretty good job physically blocking you from distractions, it also changes the way you think when you are working on your computer. You will find that when being blocked, you will have more motivation and pay more attention to your work, since there won't be distractions available to you.
Why does Cold Turkey need internet access for it to run?
- Cold Turkey accesses the Internet only to let you know if there is a new version available to download.
Does Cold Turkey come with bundled software such as adware or spyware?
- Absolutly not. Cold Turkey is 100% free/open source software that will not do anything but its sole purpose. I also don't like ads, so you won't see any of those either.
What can I do if something goes wrong?
- The program is still in beta and can still have bugs in it. If you really need to remove Cold Turkey, you can follow the removal instructions here.
Why and how is this program free then?
- Would you rather pay for it? Seriously though, I made it free because I myself like free software. That being said, if you would like to support me by helping me pay for hosting and some of my bills, you can donate here.
Which operating system does it work with?
- Cold Turkey can run on Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems. Updated versions of Windows XP, 2000 and NT are also supported. The mac version I was making is now cancelled because of the limited time I have to work on the project. There is an alternative though, it is called SelfControl.
Can't I just go in the task manager and end the process?
- No.
Can't I just uninstall the program while it's running?
- No.
Can't I just change the system time to trick the program?
- No.
Jeeze, this program seems pretty hard to get around... Is it safe?
- Yes, Cold Turkey is programmed the same way anti-virus software is programmed. There are ways to stop it, but they require you know a little about computers. For the average user, this program should be more than enough to do the job.
What if I change my mind while I'm blocked?
- Tough luck. You will have to wait until your time expires. This is why the program exists in the first place, silly.
What’s this thing about it blocking me for a week if I try to bypass it?
- Cold Turkey uses an encrypted file to keep track of time. If any encrypted value is changed so that Cold Turkey doesn't recognize it, it will reset your time to block you for a week. The average user doesn't have to worry about this though. You can't change these values by accident.
Why does the installer want me to download the .NET framework?
- If the installer asks you to download the .NET framework, it is because you currently do not have version 2.0 of the .NET framework. This framework is needed for the program to run.
