This AI Policy explains how Cold Turkey Software, Inc. ("Cold Turkey," "us," "we," or "our") uses artificial intelligence ("AI") in our services ("Services").

Our Services include our website (https://getcoldturkey.com), hereinafter referred to as our "Website"; our software products (Cold Turkey Blocker, Cold Turkey Writer, Cold Turkey Micromanager, and browser extensions), hereinafter referred to as our "Software"; and other related services, hereinafter referred to as "Service."

Overview

Our Software was first developed in 2010, before the introduction of large language models and coding agents. Over the years, we've slowly improved our Software by learning from our mistakes and listening to user feedback.

While we recognize the potential benefits of AI, we also understand the risks it would pose to our durable, time-tested code base. This is why we use AI in a very limited scope and continue to develop our Website and Software mostly by hand.

We think it's important to be transparent on how we use AI for ethical reasons and so you can make informed choices. As more and more software is developed using coding agents, we think it's a unique selling point to be mainly human created.

AI Usage During Development

Website

100% of our website text, structure, layout, and user interface elements are human created. All other website content like images and videos are human created, except for:

  • One part of an image: the cartoon character to the right of the app screenshot, at the top of our home page.

Software

100% of our software text, layout, user interface elements, and code related to our Software design and architecture are human created. All remaining code is human created, except for:

  • Less than 1% of our code: used in some atomic functions that perform a single task.

AI Usage During Use

We do not embed, use or rely on any local or third party AI models in our Software or Website.

Support

100% of our support is done by human effort with the help of templates and rules based automation, for common issues. We do not use AI to help diagnose an issue or propose solutions except in rare circumstances. If we use AI:

  • we will not disclose your personal information;
  • we will avoid using the output of AI directly and only copy relevant parts needed for a human response;
  • any AI output directly copied, will be proof read and clearly labelled as AI output before being sent to you.

Minimization of Use

We strive to use AI tools as little as possible to maintain high code quality and tasteful design while also avoiding technical debt and environmental impacts.

Our use of AI tools is selective and generally limited to small, isolated tasks that would take a disproportionate amount of time to do by hand relative to the technical debt created.

Human Oversight

We don't use coding agents to develop any parts of our Software or Website. The only AI tools used are large language models with a chat interface so that a human is always in the loop. This is to guarantee code quality and to make sure no personal information is shared. Every line of AI generated code is reviewed and fully understood before it is permitted into our code base.

Model Training

We don't use your data to help train third party AI models.

Changes To Our AI Policy

We may update our AI Policy from time to time. We will notify you of changes by updating the "effective date" at the top of this page.

You are advised to review this AI Policy periodically for any changes. Changes to this AI Policy are effective when they are posted on this page.
